LTE, enterprise and applications - where femtocells go from here

At Femtocells World Summit Mobile Europe held a round table debate, sponsored by Alcatel-Lucent, to discuss the current and future state of the femtocell market.

Topics up for discussion - where does the greatest opportunity lie for femtocells, what are the rural and metro opportunities, how will LTE impact upon femtocells and vice versa, will there be femtocell applications and what will they be, and where will the industry head over the next year.

Participants:
Keith Dyer, Editor, Mobile Europe (host); Jorge Alvarez, Network Strategy Manager, Telefónica UK;  Bill Chang, Chief Planning & Strategy Officer, U Mobile; Aditya Kaul, Practice Director, Mobile Networks, ABI Research; George Noon, Leader Innovation & Strategy, Small Cells, Alcatel-Lucent.

Interesting discussion, consensus that femtos for indoor coverage and femto-powered small cells for public capacity boost.

Two important issues not mentioned:
For capacity relief, huge numbers of small cells will be needed. But how will this be achieved in today's infrastructure?
Small cells will be important for LTE, but the major capacity boost in the next few years will be needed on HSPA - dual mode (or tri-mode with WiFi) is needed.
