3GSM 2007: Andrew debuts new remote units for high demand in-building wireless environments
Andrew Corporation, a global leader in communications systems and products, has introduced two new remote units for cost-effective radio-over-fibre applications that ensure coverage and capacity in demanding wireless environments.

The new ION-B High Power Single Band UMTS remote unit and ION-B Medium Power Triple Band EGSM/GSM1800/UMTS remote unit offer higher power options for extending in-building radio coverage and enhancing performance in multi-carrier and multi-band applications. They will debut at 3GSM World Congress as part of Andrew's ConnectOptimizeGrow solutions.
Andrew's Intelligent Optical Network (ION) series is the industry-leading optical distribution system for carrying radio signals loss-free over fibre optics, at all power levels, at distances ranging from 100 metres to 20 kilometres. ION-B systems help operators provide wireless coverage and capacity in a variety of demanding in-building scenarios, such as office complexes, skyscrapers, convention centres, shopping malls and airports.
The new Andrew ION-B remote units, which connect to a master unit up to three kilometres away, help operators address multi-operator/neutral host environments and the rising demand for 3G indoor data coverage. The remote units have greater power than any other ION-B remote unit, enhancing the system's coverage and capacity capabilities, and are future-proof due to their ability to transport radio frequencies regardless of protocol and modulation.
"As operators continue to focus on optimising network design and performance, Andrew has improved its industry-leading ION-B systems to cost-effectively help address this need," said Morgan Kurk, vice president and acting general manager, Wireless Innovations, Andrew Corporation. "The flexibility of the ION-B series makes system design and deployment easier, and these higher power remote units contribute to enhanced performance."
The ION-B single band remote unit is designed to distribute UMTS band signals along fibre, while the ION-B triple band remote unit distributes EGSM900, GSM 1800, and UMTS band signals along the same fibre. Both units can be easily commissioned and supervised via a web-based graphical user interface. In addition, ION-B's automatic gain control feature reduces design, installation, and optimisation time, and avoids field adjustments.
