Harris to build second Kosovo network

Harris Corporation today announced that it has received a Letter of Commitment from the Mobikos-Mobitel Consortium to be the sole provider of equipment and services for the second GSM mobile telephone network in Kosovo.

Harris will provide microwave equipment and services, as well as program management and systems integration for the build-out of the Mobikos-Mobitel GSM network backbone. The project will combine the products and integration expertise of two Harris divisions -- Government Communications Systems and Microwave Communications.

Mobitel, the national mobile telecom operator in Slovenia, and Mobikos, Mobitel's business partner in Kosovo, formed a consortium in 2003 to compete for the second GSM license in Kosovo. The consortium plans to invest more than US$150 million in the project and then reinvest the profits from the
enterprise in the consortium's activities in Kosovo.
