Telfort to configure handsets over the air
Wants to boost MMS and WAP usage
Telfort Netherlands has gone live with an Automatic Device Configuration platform from SmartTrust that will allow it to automatically detect handsets on its network and configure them over-the-air (OTA) with the necessary settings for services such as MMS and WAP. Based on SmartTrust’s SmartManage™ solution, the mobile operator has removed the complexity of device configuration for subscribers, delivering first-time every-time access to its portfolio of data services.
SmartManage is able to automatically detect new handsets on the GSM network, remotely assess their capabilities and existing configuration and, where necessary, provision them OTA with the correct service settings. The system also serves inbound requests from subscribers contacting Telfort’s customer care department, a web-based self care portal and SMS requests. Using SmartManage’s Batch Update facility, the operator is also able to provision multiple handsets with new service settings simultaneously.
“Value-added services such as MMS and WAP have become key revenue generators for operators. However, they rely on certain handset settings to be correctly configured and failed connections are often blamed on poor handset configuration,” explains James King, general manager EMEA, at SmartTrust. “Unfortunately, this is often the first barrier between a user and the service and after just one failed attempt to send an MMS or access a WAP service, the chance of repeat use is dramatically cut.”
Service settings can be outdated, accidentally deleted or may simply not exist on the subscriber’s current handset. Using Automatic Device Configuration to remotely, and automatically, manage the process of handset configuration removes the need for subscribers to proactively contact customer care to overcome difficulties and ensures that every handset on the network is as profitable as possible.
In a recent survey of over 6800 mobile subscribers worldwide , SmartTrust found that 18% of users had suffered a failed MMS because of incorrect configuration.
“The nature of mobile ownership is changing,” adds King. “Subscribers are churning between handsets more frequently than ever before, swapping handsets between friends and family and purchasing equipment from third-party retailers. All of these factors place enormous strain on an operator’s ability to identify devices currently in the network, understand their current configuration and deliver relevant services.”
