Quintel deploys multi-operator 3G shared antenna system

Quintel Technology has successfully installed its first multi-operator, independent variable tilt (IVT) 3G shared antenna solution at Trentham in Staffordshire on behalf of three UK mobile operators.

O2, the Trentham site owner, replaced its 3G antenna with the Quintel solution to enable coverage for Vodafone and 3 in addition to O2 from the site.

The Quintel installation at the Trentham site was significantly faster than typical site tower re-development timescales. The antenna is now fully operational as part of the O2, Vodafone and 3 networks.

Quintel's product allows, in certain circumstances, up to five mobile phone operators to share a single, conventionally sized antenna per sector yet maintain independent control of tilt, a key function for 3G network optimisation. In addition to enabling multi-operator site sharing, Quintel's shared antenna solution can also be configured to allow operators to take advantage of new optimisation freedoms.  For example, an operator can optimise different service layers through independent tilt per service from one antenna.

Quintel Technology Limited is developing a range of solutions intended to significantly enhance mobile radio performance.

Gary Dawson, Chief Executive of Quintel Technology Limited said:  "The technology behind Quintel's shared antenna is impressive but it is what it enables operators to achieve that is really exciting.

"Antenna sharing is a great example of operators working together to roll out 3G and at the same time limiting the size and number of new antenna masts.

"Where it meets operator technical requirements, the Quintel solution will help operators roll out their networks, and in addition, by managing their environmental impact in this way, operators are further able to meet their commitment to minimise the number of new masts where possible."
