Siemens provides core network technology for Tele2 in Sweden
The Swedish mobile operator Tele2 will upgrade its existing 2G and 3G core networks in Sweden to a combined 2G/3G core network for voice and data. The new technology comes from Siemens: In a framework agreement, Tele2 has commissioned the Siemens Communications Group to install and maintain a split architecture core network. This new technology will lower the operator’s administrative and operating costs and prepare the network for the growing number of 3G subscribers.
Siemens will deliver a new 3GPP R4 compliant split-architecture core network, consisting of switch servers and media gateways to Tele2 in Sweden. By 2007, Tele2’s traffic from two wireless access networks in Sweden – the Tele2 GSM network and the joint Tele2/TeliaSonera UMTS network – will be processed via this new core system. By merging the GSM and UMTS subscribers into a converged Siemens core network, the operator will have less interfaces and nodes in the network. This will lower his administrative and operating costs and increase the efficiency of providing voice and data applications.
