Golden Telecom selects Alcatel to deploy a fixed/mobile converged network in Ukraine

Alcatel has announced that it has signed a contract with the Ukrainian fixed/mobile operator Golden Telecom to deploy a fixed/mobile converged network with a next generation network (NGN) core and UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access) capability. The project is expected to be in commercial operation by the end of the year.

Alcatel says its solution   will   allow   the  operator  to  provide  converged communication  services,  offer  new  packages  of  services, retain current subscribers  and  attract  new  subscribers  (especially  in  the corporate  segment) and to expand its geographical presence in the country. The  project  is  also  a  key  to  reducing  operating  costs as a result of fixed/mobile   network   synergies   and  to  ensure  long-term  investment protection  in  preparing  for  the introduction of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) in the future.

"Our  intention  is  to facilitate the access to our services with a single subscription  to  mobile,  fixed and data services, a single access through any  device,  a  selection  of access media, personalized services and many other  innovative functionalities" said Andrii Droniuk, General Director of Golden Telecom Ukraine.

"This first fixed/mobile convergence network deployment in Ukraine is proof of   Alcatel's  commitment  to  fixed-mobile  convergence  in  the  telecom industry.  Ukraine  is  an  important step toward strengthening our leading position in mobile NGN in the fast developing Eastern Europe market," added Johan Vanderplaetse, Vice-president   for  Alcatel  activities  in  the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

In the framework of this contract, Alcatel will deliver its mobile NGN core network  based on an innovative, standards-based mobile switching solution, the  Alcatel  5020  Wireless  Call  Server  that controls distributed media gateways  and manages voice and data services. The solution is running on a state  of  the  art  IT  platform  based on open industry standards, and is designed to be ready for IMS.

Alcatel will also deliver the Alcatel 8640 Corporate Mobility Manager (CMM) that  will  enable  to  offer  advanced  fixed/mobile  converged  services, enhanced  voice/multimedia  virtual  private  network  (VPN)  services  and virtual PBX services for the corporate segment and SOHO users.

Alcatel  will  also  supply UMA trial equipment for a GSM/WiFi hybrid phone solution  and  the  Alcatel  1430  Unified  HSS  (Home  Subscriber  Server) equipment  to  obtain  a  single  repository  of all subscriber information coming  from  any  type  of  network  -  GSM, IMS, UMA, WiFi or WiMAX. This equipment  will  enable  the  operator  to  conduct  a  UMA  trial  for its subscribers  to  give  them access through a single core network to all the same services (such as SMS and MMS) regardless of whether connected through the wireless LAN or through a traditional mobile network.
