Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) unites with Korean mobile organisation to drive usability and promote Worldwide standards
OMTP, the mobile operator sponsored forum, announced today that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Korea Wireless Internet Standardization Forum (KWISF), creators of WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability).
Under the terms of the MOU, the two organisations have agreed to work together to drive international standards for mobile and IP-based services in World markets, with the Seoul-based body stating its intent to incorporate OMTP recommendations in its future specifications.
The WIPI platform provides a standardised environment for mounting and implementing applications downloaded via the wireless Internet on mobile terminals. The platform’s common interface layer makes it easier for developers to create multimedia content, giving consumers a broader choice of services, regardless of their operator or devices. In April 2005, WIPI was mandated as a standard platform in Korea.
“OMTP has been following the WIPI story over the last few years and share a number of common members and participants, notably SK Telecom, LG and Samsung,” said Anders Wasterlid, VP Products & Devices at Telefonica O2 Europe and OMTP Chairman. Tim Raby, OMTP CEO adds,“We are impressed with the way in which KWISF has helped reduce fragmentation in the Korean market. OMTP remains similarly committed to making the mobile world easier and less confusing for consumers and we’re delighted to formalise our relationship in this way.”
