Andrew to provide support to Arqiva for expanding wireless coverage in UK cities

Andrew Corporation, a leader in communications systems and products, will provide a variety of wireless products and services to support Arqiva's deployment of its CityCell neutral-host network coverage system in up to 40 city locations across the United Kingdom, under a three-year agreement between the companies.

Arqiva, a UK-based infrastructure provider for the broadcast, media and mobile communications industries, is deploying second generation (2G), third generation (3G) and WiFi systems which improve wireless coverage and capacity as a neutral host to UK operators.  Arqiva's CityCell will be installed on property owned by private enterprises and local governments, and then made available for connection to the UK wireless operators' networks for use by their customers in areas that require enhanced network coverage.  Initial system deployments will include Canary Wharf in London, the Glasgow, Scotland, subway system, and Glasgow West End.

"We are proud to contribute our expertise and highly-regarded product offerings to this important endeavor," said Andrea Casini, vice president of sales, Europe, Middle East, North Africa region, Andrew Corporation.   "Andrew has had prominent roles in providing coverage and capacity solutions at some of the world's most visible and highly-trafficked locations.  Our experience and capabilities will benefit Arqiva, the UK operators, and their customers."

Andrew will provide to Arqiva its ION-M distributed antenna system, a robust high power-density optical fiber distributed antenna system that offers excellent performance in both indoor and outdoor environments.  Andrew also will provide its Andrew Integrated Management and Operating System (A.I.M.O.S.), which Arqiva will use to manage its networks.  Andrew also may provide base station antennas, HELIAX cable products and system design and professional training services as part of a comprehensive product offering.

"Andrew was chosen as a preferred supplier because of its understanding of Arqiva's distributed antenna business and its willingness to work alongside us to help deliver the CityCell concept," said Andy Norris, head of shared solutions in Arqiva's Wireless Solutions division.  "A key benefit of the ION-M product is its small footprint and its ability to support a wide range of different radio technologies, including WiMAX, Tetra and DAB/DVB.  This enables Arqiva to offer services to many different users from a single, integrated network infrastructure."
