WIRE: New high-power UD antenna for DTV- terrestrial and mobile

The vertically polarized UD broadband antenna series from Broadcast RF group, Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), is now available in high power ratings. The latest addition to RFS's suite of compact lightweight UHF monopole antennas, the high-power UD antenna has been optimized to accommodate DTV repeater site applications, and meet the emerging needs of digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVB-H) mobile TV networks.

The high-power UD antenna supports the entire UHF band in just three models (470-to-650MHz, 520-to-760MHz, 620-to-860MHz). Provided in four distinct dipole arrays--4-, 8-, 12- and 16-bay--the RFS high-power UD antenna features input power ratings of between 4 to 10kW and nominal gains of between 8 to 14dBd, making it ideal for larger ‘cell' coverage. "Repeater sites can now service bigger coverage areas," said Mick Bennett, RFS Global Product Manager Broadcast, Towers and Defence Systems. "The vertical polarization of the UD antenna will help enable broadcasters to repeat the horizontally polarized ‘source' broadcast signal on adjacent channels. This allows a more efficient use of broadcast spectrum."

Constructed of aluminium and housed within a fibreglass radome, the UD series is light, slender and easy-to-install. The UD series weighs in at between 63 to 152 kilograms, and measures between 2.4 to 6.8 metres in length. This, coupled with a diameter of 320 to 419 millimetres, makes the UD series ideal for crowded tower-top applications.

"The UD antenna series is ideal for overlaying mobile TV services on existing broadcast and wireless communications networks," said Bennett. "It features a compact construction and its unique design minimizes RF interference with existing horizontally polarized terrestrial broadcasting equipment. The UD antenna series is a unique high-power antenna solution that is complemented by RFS's well-established suite of higher-power antenna systems."
