WIRE: Motorola to upgrade Cologne Bonn Airport's TETRA network
Motorola has announced it has been selected to upgrade Cologne Bonn Airport's TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) digital radio system.
The new, state of the art communication system will support all of the airport's operations - such as fleet, freight, logistics and ground handling - including UPS' European hub, which is based at the airport. The system will also be used by the airport's fire brigade. The deployment and migration of users onto the new Dimetra IP Compact network will be completed by the end of this year.
Cologne Bonn Airport is Germany's second largest airport, and the country's leading low cost carrier hub. The airport serves over 10 million passengers a year, 130 destinations and 60 passenger airlines.
"Upgrading our network to Motorola's latest IP-based TETRA system gives us a platform to develop our communications systems for the use of data as well as voice communications. That will enable us to further increase our efficiency, coordination and speed of operation. We have already experienced the benefits that TETRA delivers, and this new system will further guarantee the levels of security and reliability that are essential in our mission critical environment," said Hans-Peter Buhs, head of telecoms at Cologne Bonn Airport.
"With an extensive track record and proven expertise in radio technology, we are confident that Motorola will deliver and support a high quality solution swiftly," added Hans-Peter Buhs.
Manuel Torres, vice president, Motorola Government & Public Safety, EMEA said: "Many airports are evaluating their communications network to drive efficiency and performance. Increased concerns over security are also encouraging airports to ensure that their radio communications are secure and robust."
Mr Torres continued: "Our TETRA investment, expertise and services put us in a good position to deliver affordable, mission critical solutions. All solutions are carefully considered to comply with the needs of the customer, optimizing individual requirements in terms of applications, system roll-out, integration and support services."
Motorola has a long and trusting relationship with Cologne Bonn Airport, spanning 20 years, including the supply of the airport's first TETRA network which has been in operation since 2001. The new Dimetra IP Compact system will take over from the existing Motorola digital TETRA infrastructure, providing enhanced channel capacity for an increased number of users.
The contract builds on Motorola's leadership and innovation in the deployment of TETRA solutions. Munich Airport and Leipzig Halle Airport both recently signed contracts with Motorola for TETRA solutions, as did Spain's Barcelona Airport. The world's first commercial TETRA contract was signed between Motorola and Norway's Gardermoen Airport.
A portion of the revenue from this contract has been recognized already in 2nd Quarter 2007.
