NEC, NetCracker complete vCPE proof of concept with Portugal Telecom

NEC and NetCracker have completed a proof of concept for a new virtualised customer premises equipment (vCPE) solution with Portugal Telecom.

The solution, aimed at residential markets, will allow Portugal Telecom to migrate IP networking functions from users’ home gateways to its data centre. In doing so, the operator will be able to speed up the integration and delivery of new consumer services at a reduced cost, NEC said.

The vCPE solution will also allow Portugal Telecom to offer “advanced” service features over any broadband connection, allowing it to personalise users’ experience regardless of their location. 

Meanwhile, the solution provides customers with “unique” on-demand capabilities, such as the ability to access device-specific usage and parental controls via a self-service portal. It also offers “next-generation internet connectivity” without the need for customers or technicians to install additional devices on customer premises, NEC said.

Jaime Serrano, President at NEC Portugal Telecommunicacoes e Sistemas, said: “We are extremely pleased with the positive results of this PoC. In addition to current services, this solution enables new services to be launched and configured for customers much faster and more efficiently, leading to significant cost reductions.

“Moreover, the need for technicians to visit customers’ homes is clearly reduced, also resulting in lower costs.”

NEC and NetCracker are currently working together on a project to help service providers explore the opportunities offered by SDN and NFV, which includes the co-development of new end-to-end technologies.
