    Polkomtel brings VoWiFi to Poland

    -

Polkomtel, the Polish operator of the Plus brand, has launched the country’s first trial of Voice over Wi-Fi.

The operator has used Nokia Networks voice core technology, including its IP multimedia subsystem, open telecommunications application server and border gateway. The vendor also worked on the planning and optimisation of the service, system integration, implementation and support for the trial.

The trial is open to Plus customers in Poland and across Europe. Polkomtel said it wanted to test the functionality of the service before launching it commercially.

It launched Voice over LTE last year and the operator said both services would underpin its enhanced voice products in future.

Justyna Kulka, Director of the Offer Management Department at Polkomtel, said: “The purpose of the trial with Nokia Networks is to fine-tune this innovative service to a degree that cannot be reached through lab testing. Thanks to the engagement of Plus users in the testing phase, we expect the final product to fully meet their needs and expectations. Our next goal is to integrate VoWiFi and VoLTE as an ultimate solution for voice services.”

Marcin Guzy, Head of Polkomtel Customer Team at Nokia Networks, added: “We are pleased to support Polkomtel’s first Wi-Fi calling trial. The new service enables voice communications from a user’s phone number even where mobile networks are hard to access but where Wi-Fi is available. Regardless of where they are, Polkomtel customers will be able to carry out voice calls as they normally do.”
