Turkcell, Ericsson trial live traffic steering across cellular, Wi-Fi networks

    -

Turkcell has backed Ericsson’s real-time traffic steering technology after completing a trial in an Istanbul shopping centre.

The operator said it was able to steer users between its 3G and Wi-Fi networks, leading to better app coverage and performance.

Real-time traffic steering works by assessing KPIs in cellular and Wi-Fi networks and dynamically shifting the users’ smartphone connections between networks, even in high traffic areas.

According to Ziya Erdem, Ericsson Turkey General Manager, some devices select Wi-Fi even when it is not optimal from a resource utilisation and user experience perspective.

Ericsson said the technology could help mobile operators deal with increasing data demands and reduce the strain on cellular networks.

The vendor added that the network-driven nature of the technology means users do not need to download additional software tools to benefit. It works with any EAP-SIM enabled smartphone.

Turkcell CTO Bulent Elonu said: “We were able to verify that Ericsson’s Traffic Steering feature does indeed maximise the user experience. We will continue to work towards serving our customers with the latest technology.”

In September, Nokia announced it had tested a new live network solution that uses AI to identify problems during use and uses machine learning to provide automated solutions over time, such as service adaption and traffic steering.
