Ericsson, Telstra hold five carrier LTE-A demo on live network

    -

Ericsson has helped Australian operator Telstra hit speeds of almost 1GBps across the “world’s first” five carrier LTE-A demonstration on a live network.

The vendor said the demonstration was the latest showcase of how LTE can help operator move towards 5G network speeds.

In total, 100MHz of spectrum was aggregated across Telstra’s 700MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz holdings. Two bands were aggregated at the latter frequency, with data sent to a Cobham Aeroflex TM500 device.

Ericsson said it tracked speeds of more than 950MBps by using a user datagram protocol-based application. By using the speedtest.net website, it tracked speeds of more than 843MBps.

Per Narvinger, Head of LTE, Ericsson said: “With the high pace of innovation in the device and application industry, users increasingly expect high-performance coverage and the ability to use their apps anytime, anywhere. Activating new advanced network capabilities provides operators with a more solid and secure network performance.”

Mike Wright, Telstra Group Managing Director, Networks, said: “Demand for a superior user experience is ever increasing as customers are ‘always-on’ and have access to new and advanced technologies.”

He added: “The demonstration of 1 Gbps end to end capability shows the advanced state of these standards and our ability to rapidly bring them into commercial service in order to deliver increased capacity in our network to meet growing demand.”

Earlier this month, Ericsson launched a new 4G signalling solution that it said could help increase downlink speeds on LTE terminals by up to 50 percent.
