Telia holds Industry 4.0 smart factory demos with Nokia

    -

Telia has teamed up with Nokia to demonstrate how 5G technologies can transform industrial processes from the production line to offering remote data exchange to customers.

The two telcos worked with software start-up Finwe at Nokia’s prototype Conscious Factory site in Oulu.

The Finnish vendor supplied its 5G AirScale and multi-access edge computing (MEC) platforms for the two demonstrations, which used the 28GHz band.

The first demo showed how 5G could be used to monitor and analyse video feeds of an assembly line, instantly alerting an operator of any problems along the process and correcting them in real-time. It used a data centre solution with Intel processors to deliver network edge and cloud capabilities.

The second trial also used Nokia’s AirFrame data centre solution, the vendor’s MEC platform and Finwe’s video analytics platform to deliver cloud services to the factory site from a data centre some 600 kilometres away.

Janne Koistinen, Director of 5G Program at Telia Finland, said: “Under our ‘5G Finland’ initiative we are working with companies such as Nokia to accelerate the fourth industrial revolution in the country. In this trial we could show how we can extend our service offering to new industry customers to enable efficiencies that will advance their production capabilities.”

Last month, Telia held a 5G trial of augmented reality in Stockholm in partnership with Ericsson.
