Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson lights up German smart factory with dedicated network

    -

Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson have illuminated a new public and private LTE network for German lighting manufacturer OSRAM.

The operator is providing a dual slice network with local cloud deployment at OSRAM’s Schwabmünchen facilities in southern Germany.

The network is initially being used to prototype and test and robotics solution on the company’s shop floor. Autonomous vehicles will transport goods across the facility in what Deutsche Telekom described as a “more flexible production environment”.

Ericsson is providing the campus network infrastructure at the Schwabmünchen with a private LTE network inside the factory, comprising dedicated coverage and local core network and guaranteeing throughput, latency, reliability, security, IoT device management and other quality of service requirements.

Deutsche Telekom said manufacturing companies are a key market for delivering dedicated connectivity beginning with LTE and on to 5G.

Alex Jinsung Choi, SVP Research & Technology Innovation, Deutsche Telekom, said: “In line with Industry 4.0 requirements, our customers want extremely reliable and high-performance network solutions tailored to their specific demands.

“Working together with our partner Ericsson, we will provide dedicated campus solutions that allow customers such as OSRAM to develop and optimize their production processes.”

Erik Ekudden, SVP & Group CTO, Ericsson addedL “The cooperation with OSRAM and Deutsche Telekom is a great opportunity for us to explore the industry requirements on future technologies. These kinds of collaborations will help us in our product development towards 5G in the context of Industry 4.0.”

Yesterday, Telefónica and Nokia revealed a new demonstration of 5G connectivity that used augmented reality to manage a production line in Spain.
