BTI Systems enhances wireless backhaul with packet plus optical networking solutions

    -

BTI today announced its newest solution targeted to address the massive data demand on backhaul networks using the BTI 7000 Series' multi-layer metro bandwidth aggregation capabilities. The BTI 7000 Series combines OTN-enabled WDM and Carrier Ethernet to scale capacity, supports profitable growth of new wireless data services, and ensures a seamless evolution to IP over Ethernet for 4G wireless backhaul.

Ethernet is increasingly prevalent in wireless and backhaul service provider networks as a cost-effective, high capacity data traffic offload connection from base station to MSC, overlaying existing TDM (SONET/SDH) connectivity.  The BTI solution uses the BTI 7000 Series to provide flexible Layer 1 and Layer 2 backhaul to enable the convergence of TDM transport (SONET/SDH) with Ethernet-based data connectivity in an ultra-compact, 2RU chassis.  High density BTI 7000 Series modules for the solution include the 10-port Multiprotocol Muxponder (MXP) and packetVXTM Ethernet service module.

The 10-port MXP provides aggregation of SONET/SDH and Gigabit Ethernet onto 10G wavelengths; software programmable ports simplify migration from SONET/SDH to Gigabit Ethernet without changing client service modules.  The 10-port MXP's innovative distributed add/drop capabilities enables the aggregation of multiple access nodes to the MSC hub on a single wavelength with rapid 50ms protection switching for high availability.  For service providers deploying new tower solutions based on Carrier Ethernet, the BTI 7000 Series' packetVX modules deliver high GbE fan-in and 10GbE interconnect that is tightly integrated with BTI's WDM layer.  packetVX's Carrier Ethernet implementation provides the scalability, SLA enforcement, OAM functionality, and capacity to ensure  4G readiness of today's network deployments, simplifying migration strategies.

"Deployment of packet optical backhaul network solutions for 3G and 4G requirements provides a high capacity, transparent architecture to deliver the IP-based, high-speed connectivity that supports a graceful evolution to 4G", said Peter Green, Product Manager, Packet Solutions Portfolio, BTI Systems.  "The BTI solution supports higher bandwidth rates at attractive cost per Mbit that cost-effectively broadens the applicability of WDM as the fiber footprint continues to expand within backhaul networks."

The BTI 7000 Series' multiple chassis options, modular configuration capabilities, and outside plant deployable network elements simplify deployment at metro aggregation and core sites within backhaul networks.  The platform's operational value and combination of OTN-enable WDM and Carrier Ethernet addresses 3G data bandwidth capacity augmentation today and ensures a network that is ready to deliver the IP-based, high-speed connectivity required for  4G evolution.
