Hi3G picks Tele2 network head for new CTO

    -

Hi3G Scandinavia has hired a Tele2 veteran as its CTO as it seeks to prepare its network for 5G.

Per Stigenberg will take up the position from 14 August, reporting to CEO Peder Ramel. The operator trades as 3 in Denmark and Sweden.

At Tele2, Stigenberg was director of the operator’s core network across Sweden, the Netherlands, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Croatia.

Under his tenure, Tele2 introduced VoLTE and a virtualised packet core. The operator is currently upgrading its LTE network.

Prior to this role, Stigenberg was Head of Strategy and Development for Tele2’s IT department.

The new CTO brings 20 years’ experience in the telecoms and IT sectors and holds a Masters degree in Engineering Physics from Uppsala University.

He replaces Jörgen Askeroth, CTO at the operator for the past 16 years. Askeroth will become a part-time adviser to Peder Ramel.

Stigenberg said: “I am thrilled to contribute to Three’s success, to drive and develop its technical infrastructure and to offer strong and competitive mobile communication solutions to all customers in Sweden and Denmark.”

Ramel added: “With his deep technical knowledge in IT and networks, as well as strong commercial experience, [Stigenberg] is the perfect person to continue to improve and drive Three’s technical development and business in both Sweden and Denmark.”

Although Hi3G did not specify what Stigenberg’s immediate priorities would be, the operator is currently working with Ericsson to upgrade its radio and transmission network in Denmark and Sweden as it looks to get ready for 5G.
