Samsung unwraps two new Exynos processors

    -

The world’s largest smartphone maker Samsung has launched two new Exynos processors, the octa-core Exynos 5422 and the Exynos 5 Hexa 5260.

The 5422 is a soft update to the previous 5420 and while the new system on a chip is still built on a 28nm process, it enjoys much higher frequencies on both the Cortex A7 and A15 clusters. The two clusters can run their cores at up to 1.5GHz and 2.1GHz respectively.

The 5422 supports HMP heterogeneous multi-processing, and Samsung’s large scale integration division said that unlike the 5420, this one is HMP enabled.

HMP refers to the ability for the OS to use and schedule threads on all 8 cores at the same time, putting those threads with low performance requirements on the little cores and high performance threads on the big cores. Samsung equipped the same ARM Mali-T628 MP6 graphics processing unit from the 5420, which runs at the same frequency.

Meanwhile the Exynos 5 Hexa or the Exynos 5260, which is installed on the Galaxy Note 3 Neo, comes with six CPU cores: two 1.7GHz ARM Cortex A15 cores and four 1.3GHz ARM Cortex A7 cores. Samsung said that the Exynos 5 Hexa supports WQXGA (2560 x 1600) display resolution and also supports full-HD (1080p) playback at up to 60 frames-per-second (fps).

Exynos 5422 Octa will enter mass production by the end of March, while the Hexa model is already in mass production.

The Korean smartphone manufacturer has also introduced its newest 16MP and 13MP (16:9) ISOCELL CMOS camera sensors. Both offer 1.12µm big ISOCELL pixels and 1080p video recording.

The 16MP sensor is capable of 1080p at a rate of 60fps capturing plus burst mode at 16MP at 60fps and will enter mass production this quarter. The 13MP one supports 13MP burst mode at 30fps and will be available in by June 2014.
