Telia deploys Nokia’s cloud EPC across six markets

    -

Telia is to deploy Nokia’s cloud native packet core solution across the Nordics and Baltics as it looks to meet changing demands of mobile broadband provision and prepare for delivering enhanced digital services.

The deal covers Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, Estonia and Lithuania. As part of the project, Telia will shift its existing physical common evolved packet core across its different markets to a cloud native solution sitting upon shared cloud infrastructure.

Nokia will deploy the operator’s new core network across numerous data centres in each of Telia’s opcos.

The vendor said in a statement that the technology will help Telia to streamline its engineering and operations, lowering the cost of launching and managing new data services, and speeding up their time to market.

It added that its solution gives access across licensed, shared, unlicensed and fixed networks, as well as delivering dynamic cloud networking services.

Sri Reddy, Senior Vice-President of Nokia’s IP and Optical business, said: “There is tremendous potential with the continued growth of mobile broadband, and with new services and 5G in the near future.

“To take advantage of these opportunities, Telia must deploy a new generation cloud-native packet core that is able to connect to a greater variety of devices and deliver a broader range of services over multiple access technologies.”

Reddy added the technology will provide Telia with a strong foundation for its evolution from LTE towards 5G.

Telia did not comment on the announcement.

In December, it announced it was leaning on Nokia to test NB-IoT and LTE-M technology.
