IN-FUSIO's gaming service becomes global reference point as operator opts for proven capability and ARPU generating service

IN-FUSIO, a leading mobile games service provider and publisher in Europe, US, and China, has announced that the Orange Group has selected its ExEn Gaming Extensions (EGE) to be a key feature of its Signature phone range, for Java-enabled handsets across Europe.

IN-FUSIO's EGE, which is compatible with all Java handsets, has been chosen by Orange for its ability to provide the most comprehensive service for generating mobile game communities and sustained repeat revenue. IN-FUSIO mobile game service players have an ARPU three times higher than Java only offerings.

While EGE supports Java and BREW platforms it is the focus on service which is winning industry support. By adding end-user and 'managed' functionality EGE ensures that the mobile game experience is fun, addictive and, above all, intuitive.

Orange first adopted IN-FUSIO's ExEn gaming service three years ago and has since built a community of loyal and avid mobile game players. With the addition of IN-FUSIO's EGE, as a device requirement, Orange is ensuring that it continues to succeed as a leading brand for the youth market.

The first Orange handset to ship with EGE is due to be launched in Q1 2005.

Gilles Raymond, co-CEO and President, IN-FUSIO said: "The decision by Orange to adopt ExEn Gaming Extensions for its Java gaming handsets goes beyond a simple decision between technologies. What is at stake today is what operators can offer their customers' communities in the form of value-added
services, increased functionality and ease of use and not what type of technology is embedded in handsets."

Julien Billot, Vice President of Marketing for Orange France said: "IN-FUSIO's EGE will introduce exciting games features and powerful players' community management tools. Thanks to our history with IN-FUSIO, we know that this dynamic combination of games and services can deliver revenues
over and above other providers. It is for this reason that we partner so closely with IN-FUSIO, and why we want the ExEn Gaming Extensions to be embedded on our Signature phone series."

Florian Seiche, Director of Devices Orange: "Our focus on Orange Signature phone customisation is to deliver an easy to use experience, that removes barriers to adoption and increase usage. In the field of mobile gaming, IN FUSIO's EGE fits perfectly with this strategy, combining the benefits of Java standard and full end to end experience definition."

Seiche added: "IN-FUSIO's ExEn Gaming Extension will introduce exciting games features and powerful players' community management tools. Orange is keen to leverage current successes with IN-FUSIO in France, the UK and the
Netherlands in order to accelerate the usage of mobile games and enhance the mobile gamer experience.

Motorola’s experience enabled rapid deployment in Northern Portugal

Motorola’s infrastructure sector has announced that it completed the first phase of deployment of Optimus’ 3G mobile services network, ahead of the 1st July launch date demanded by the Portuguese regulator.

Deployment success was ensured by Motorolas strong relationship with Optimus and its extensive experience deploying networks in difficult terrain while integrating with legacy equipment from other vendors.  Optimus 3G service was launched commercially at the beginning of June 2004, only six months after the contract was awarded in January 2004.

The network provides coverage to Optimus subscribers in northern Portugal, which includes a population of over four million.  Motorola equipped Optimus network with compact and easy-to-install Horizon 3G base stations, which enabled the short deployment time and provide a simple, future migration path to High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA).

With Motorolas UMTS network solution, Optimus offers its customers excellent quality of service, with a low drop-call rate and a seamless hand-over between 2G and 3G calls.  In addition, Motorolas network optimization and radio planning services ensure quality coverage and excellent performance is achieved.

Jose Pinto Correia, chief technical officer of Optimus said: Being able to launch our 3G services ahead of schedule is a clear demonstration of our committed relationship with Motorola and the expertise, quality and value that Motorola brings to our business.  By meeting the challenges of deploying a mobile network in the difficult terrain and in a short timescale, Motorola ensured that we are able to offer our customers innovative 3G services through our Optimus Zone portal.
As the European UMTS market continues to grow, the completion of Optimus network deployment is another step in Motorolas continued strategy to make 3G a reality, said Margaret Rice-Jones, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager for Motorolas infrastructure sector, EMEA.  Our experience and technical strength gives us an advantage in helping customers such as Optimus to launch their UMTS networks quickly and efficiently.

SurfKitchen, the leading provider of Mobile Dynamic User Experience (DUE) software, has raised $17.5m from four venture capitalist companies in its third round of funding. This funding is recognition of SurfKitchen's impressive progress in capturing 15 new customers during the last 12 months, resulting in its domination of the DUE market.

Accel Partners, a venture capital firm dedicated to helping category defining technology companies, is co-leading the round with Scottish Equity Partners, one of the UK's largest independent venture capital firms. Argo Global Capital is completing the round and there is also an extended commitment from SurfKitchen's current investors Add Partners.

Philip Letts, CEO SurfKitchen, said: "We are pleased to have secured funding from three such distinguished investment partners and to continue our work with Add Partners. SurfKitchen is going from strength to strength - our revenue has more than tripled in a year, we have recently expanded into Asia and have secured our first customer in that region."

SurfKitchen is the global DUE market leader, both in terms of revenue and market share having captured 15 customers since the launch of its flagship software SurfKit MobileTM in May 2003, including O2 UK, O2 Germany, Telenor, Sonofon and TIM in Greece.

Kaj-Erik Relander, General Partner at Accel Partners, said: "The DUE market is one of the key growth areas in the mobile industry as users demand better data services and an increasing number of organisations look to interact directly with their customers or workforce through mobile channels. We believe SurfKitchen's technology puts it in the pole position for this market and we are confident our investment will bring success."

Calum Paterson, Managing Director of Scottish Equity Partners, added: "We are pleased to support SurfKitchen in its expansion plans, having identified it as a business with significant growth potential in a large and exciting market. We place a lot of emphasis on the calibre of the management teams we back and SurfKitchen is very well positioned in that regard."

The DUE market is set for rapid growth over the next three years as the number of mobile devices that now support this advanced software has exploded. As wireless revenues increasingly come from data rather than voice services, these advanced solutions will be key for future profitability. SurfKitchen's SurfKit Mobile is the only software that can become the ubiquitous platform in the DUE market due to its unique combination of compatibility with all major operating platforms, over the air customisation and ease of use.

Maisy Ng, managing partner and co-founder, Add Partners, concluded: "We are delighted at the rapid growth of SurfKitchen and are proud of the part we have played in that success. The company has repaid our faith many times over and we look forward to its continued leadership of this lucrative market."

Australian conference 1st in the world to implement a cross-platform mobile identification system that is supported by more than 1 billion handsets worldwide.

DigitaLife2004, a Consumer Electronics exhibition to be held in the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, will offer its patrons the ability to carry their wallets, digitally, inside their mobile phones.

Visitors – upon the purchase of their tickets – will be able to elect to carry their event tickets, business cards, ShowCash debit cards and a Loyalty card, all in their phones during the exhibition. Tickets will be issued as SMSs, and ID cards saved as Address Book entries. These tickets and ID cards can then be scanned, as if they were physically presented in their paper or plastic form.
“We are very excited to be launching this as the world’s first. We believe this to be a new frontier to the Digital Age, as it revolutionises consumer lives and digital commerce,” said Adrian Jenkins, CEO of AJB Publishing, the organiser of the event.
The creation, distribution and scanning of these mobile IDs are powered by START’s MobileID patent-pending mobile ID technology. START Corporation is a provider of enterprise SMS solutions.
START MobileID technology enables this service by encoding the information otherwise stored in barcodes or magnetic strips into a special numeric geometry. This number is then optically scanned and decoded.
Unlike its picture-message counterparts, this technology is handset-independent and carrier-independent, and is supported by 100% of message-enabled handsets in the market, including GSM, CDMA, 3G, i-Mode and Blackberry. As numbers are language-independent, it is internationally compatible.
Such a technology can be used to securely replace tickets, vouchers, payment cards, loyalty cards, travel passes, ID cards, bill-payment barcodes or any other types of physical ID tokens. It is the beginning to the Age of the “Paperless Wallet”.
START is also working with leading event registration service provider Info Salons to deploy this technology across conferences in the Asia Pacific Region. Info Salons has provided registration services for large-scale events such as CeBit.

Including over 1,500 customer upgrades – Two retail outlets opened – New phone insurance product announced with 3 free months for new customers

Anglia Telecom,  a wholly owned subsidiary of TTG Europe plc, the AIM quoted provider of fixed and mobile, voice and internet telecommunications solutions to business customers in the Benelux and the UK, has announced that it achieved its highest-ever number of monthly mobile connections in June.

Anglia sold over 3,500 brand new connections and carried out over 1,500 handset upgrades. This is substantially higher than the connection rate for previous months and continues the recent trend of growth in the company's business. Current figures for July show that the new month has followed through strongly with similar levels of connection.

As a consequence, Anglia has taken on additional staff to deal with its continuing expansion which also includes the opening of two new mobile phone shops, one in Great Yarmouth and one in Ipswich.

This month Anglia Telecom also introduced a new insurance product. This will enable existing and new customers to buy insurance at competitive rates for their mobile phones underwritten by one of the UK's major insurance providers. For new customers the initial three-month period will be free.

All of these new initiatives come partly as a result of Anglia's continuing progress in expanding its dealer base and its ability to provide them with the tools to give customers first-class service and value. It already has a nationwide network of resellers through which it offers UK-based SME and corporate customers a complete range of fixed and mobile solutions for voice, data and internet.

Andrew Smith, Chief Executive Officer, Anglia Telecom said: "We are very pleased with the progress that Anglia has made over the course of the last few months. We are doing more business as a result of a clear focus on recruiting dealers and ensuring that they are trained to our high standards as quickly as possible. We have also ensured that the quality of the dealers we already have on board is maintained. We are delighted to be opening two retail outlets in East Anglia to support the ongoing expansion of our business.

Justin Humphries of Just Call In, one of Anglia Telecom's dealers said: "We have been impressed by the vigour with which Anglia is pushing into the market. The innovation which has been displayed, particularly with the introduction of the new insurance products and the expansion of the retail outlets, will ensure that Anglia keeps its place as one of the top telecommunications companies catering for the needs of the SME market in the UK."

June’s UK text messaging figure of 2.10 billion sets a new record, making it the 6th consecutive month of reporting a total in excess of 2 billion texts, according to figures released today by the Mobile Data Association (MDA). Person-to-person texts sent across the UK GSM network operators last month show an increase of 28% on the total sent during the same period in 2003.

Throughout June and July the Mobile Data Association (MDA) and Shearings Holidays have been hosting a series of drop in text messaging workshops and special promotion days for the 50+ age group at Wyevale Garden Centres.

The events are proving to be a huge success, Swindon being the busiest so far with 200 visitors. Experts have been answering queries, teaching people how to text and providing guidance on using handsets at home and abroad, now that the holiday season is upon us.

The majority of visitors to the roadshows have not known how to text at all and are hesitant to use the facility, but are pleasantly surprised once they have talked to the text message team.

On learning how to text, one visitor announced how ‘cool’ it was that she could now text her grand-children, and how delighted they would be to get a message from Gran!

A couple, one of whom was deaf, were amazed at how easy text messaging actually is and on realising that handsets can vibrate rather than ring, they have decided to invest in mobile technology purely for its text messaging purposes.

The programme of workshops has been developed by the MDA as part of its ongoing education initiative for older consumers.

Over the last five years ( has witnessed text messaging grow from a popular craze to becoming an essential communication tool. The full statistics of this text message explosion and monthly figure releases can be found at: also carries out text message counts on specific days throughout the year. Diary dates incorporating the most recent figures are listed on the web site at

StarHub's latest service further strengthens its stronghold in wireless push email solutions

StarHub, Singapore's innovative info-communications provider, and Smartner, the winner of GSM Innovative Award 2003 and the European leader in mobile email and office solutions, have announced StarHub's deployment of the award-winning Smartner Duality Always-on Mail Solution to further extend its popular suite of PushMail services and provide instant email connectivity to a variety of Windows Mobile or Symbian based mobile devices such as O2 Xda II, Sony Ericsson P900 and Nokia 6600.

Starting from 22 July 2004, StarHub's corporate customers can subscribe to the new mobile data service - StarHub Duality - at S$28 monthly for 4 MB of data access or S$68 monthly for unlimited data access.

StarHub Duality offers connection to two different email servers - Domino and Exchange, and extends secure access to users on Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes email browsers through their mobile phones.

The unique technology powering StarHub Duality automatically and instantaneously delivers emails received at the desktops or laptops, to users via their mobile phones. They can then reply to the emails received as well as compose new emails from their mobile phones, like they would on their computers in the office.  With StarHub's extensive GPRS roaming coverage, customers who are overseas are able to receive emails pushed to their mobile devices as seamlessly as sending or receiving SMS messages. For example, while waiting in the immigration line at the airport in India, you can still receive new corporate emails via your mobile phone instantaneously.

Companies on Exchange server and Microsoft Windows Mobile devices enjoy the added convenience of providing their users better control over their desktop functionality with the access of calendar and email folders on their mobile phones. They can view and update their calendar, set appointments, create and accept meeting requests, as well as file their emails from the Inbox directly into the folders on their desktop.

"Today, business deals are not always conducted in boardrooms. Key decisions are often made while executives are on the move around the world. Increasingly, companies recognise that it is crucial to provide seamless and easy to use always-on email access for their executives to gain the edge of faster turnaround time and higher productivity regardless of location," said Mr Chan Kin Hung, head of mobile services at StarHub. "StarHub is the pioneer provider of wireless push email solution with our launch of BlackBerry for Enterprise, BlackBerry for Individual, and BlackBerry on Nokia solutions.  To help our customers better manage information, converse and exchange ideas wherever they go with a good selection of various mobile devices, we decided to expand our suite of PushMail solutions by introducing StarHub Duality.  This not only allows customers to have access to time-critical information, but also a choice of PushMail devices to best suit their lifestyle needs and preferences."

Added Mr Chan: "With their office emails and calendar appointments 'pushed' seamlessly to and sent from mobile phones, our customers on any of our PushMail solutions can stay truly mobile and connected via the email anytime, anywhere. This way, they will never miss another important email again."

"We are proud to bring an open-standard push email solution to Singapore on StarHub's advanced and robust GSM/GPRS network with extensive roaming capabilities," said Mr Paul Hedman, chief executive officer, Smartner.  "Together with StarHub, the leading solution amongst enterprises and business professionals in Europe is now available for the first time in Asia Pacific."

This new value-added service will also be available soon to individual StarHub mobile customers who require always-on access to their corporate email accounts.

ARM microprocessor cores will power new wireless products, helping Huawei to drive business growth in dynamic new markets

Huawei Technologies and ARM have today announced a major licensing agreement for ARM7 and ARM9 family microprocessors. Huawei, a fast-growing networking and wireless solutions provider, will launch a range of new wireless products based on the ARM architecture in 2006. The company's existing strength in mobility ideally positions it to target the WCDMA wireless market with the ARM Powered solutions.

Speed of product development, containing costs and managing risks were key factors in Huawei's decision for a partner and processor architecture that would help it succeed in this highly competitive market.

"Simply put, we must innovate to stay competitive. Entering the wireless market will have a great impact on our business, so it was critical to select an architecture on which we could rely," said He Tingbo, vice president of Research & Development, Huawei Technologies. "We have to move fast and be flexible in order to keep abreast of changing consumer  demands. ARM's extensive Partner network and expertise in creating digital solutions for consumers on the move provides the balance we need."

This also means members of the ARM Partner network in China will have even greater access to design their own system-on-chip products, supporting the advancement of the electronics industry in China.

"This strategic agreement underlines ARM's experience and knowledge in China. Huawei is an exciting company to be aligned with, especially at this time and at this point in its evolution," said Jun Tan, president of ARM China. "The ARM architecture is a proven foundation on which Huawei can create products to enable consumers to access meaningful digital content whether at home, work or at play."
