Vodafone partners Glasfaser Nordwest to expand Gigabit footprint

-

The operator will be able to offer 1.5 million more premises Gigabit broadband this autumn as it continues efforts to turnaround its fixed connectivity business in Germany

Vodafone Deutschland has signed up another wholesale broadband partner, Glasfaser Nordwest, which is a joint venture between Telekom Deutschland and EWE.

From this autumn, they will jointly market Vodafone’s fibre broadband services to businesses and homes, delivered on Glasfaser Nordwest infrastructure. This will give up to 1.5 million households in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Bremen (pictured) in north-west Germany access to gigabit-speed connectivity, telephony and TV from Vodafone.

At the end of March 2025 (the end of fiscal year 2025), Vodafone Germany had about 10.118 million fixed broadband customers. It is the largest provider of fixed-line gigabit connectivity in Germany, marketing its services to 25 million homes via its own network and 5 million more through partners. It has also long boasted that it is the largest unified fibre network in Germany.

However, during the 2025 fiscal year, Vodafone lost 3 million TV customers as tenants in multi-dwelling premises gained the right to choose their own broadband services provider through a law that came into force in July 2024.

Previously tenants had to use the provider chosen by the building’s owner. Vodafone was the ‘incumbent’ choice due to its acquisition of Liberty Global’s cable operation in Germany (and the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania) in 2019.

About 4.5 million out of 8.5 million households affected chose to change broadband provider. Vodafone Germany suffered a net loss of 102,000 fixed broadband customers in fiscal 2025 and a 10.7% decline in fixed service revenue. It lost a further 63,000 broadband subscriptions in the the third quarter of the current, 2026, financial year.

Glasfaser Nordwest’s target is to have passed up to 1.8 million households and businesses in 2028.
