The kick-off meeting takes place 1-2 July in Torino – all ETSI members can participate and so can non-members who sign up
ETSI has set up a new Software Development Group OpenOP (SDG OOP). It is developing an open-source Operator Platform to provide a 6G testbed and standardised APIs.
Born out of the EU-funded SUNRISE-6G project, the group will use GSMA’s requirements and APIs for federation and will expose the Linux Foundation’s (LF) CAMARA service APIs in its bid to simplify the exposure of network services and resources.
The platform will serve as a neutral, non-commercial environment where research organisations, SMEs and telecom players can jointly experiment, develop and test new capabilities collaboratively. It aims to foster innovation across sectors like Industrial IoT, automotive, eHealth and smart agriculture.
The group’s work will also enable integration with a range of south-bound platforms such as Kubernetes, 3GPP Network Exposure Functions, and ETSI’s Multi-access Edge Computing and NFV Orchestration.
Key collaborators
The new group will collaborate with key industry players, open-source communities and stakeholders such as GSMA, LF CAMARA, and 3GPP, while enhancing the broader ETSI portfolio of software and standardisation initiatives, ETSI says.
“OpenOP represents a new milestone in bringing research, standardisation, and open-source communities together under ETSI’s umbrella,” said Vasileios Theodorou of Intracom Telecom, Convenor of SDG OpenOP. “By providing an open-source implementation of the Operator Platform, ETSI is reinforcing its commitment to industry collaboration, practical innovation and actively supporting the development of future-proof, interoperable network solutions.”
The founding members of SDG OpenOP include Intracom Telecom, Industrial Systems Institute (Athena Research Center), Motorola Mobility, Orange Romania, OTE, Eurecom, Fraunhofer FOKUS, and i2CAT Research Centre. See full list of SDG OOP Members and Participants.
SDG OpenOP will hold its kick-off meeting 1-2 July 2025, in Torino (IT). Participation is open to ETSI members and non-members upon the signature of the SDG OOP Agreement. More information here.
