*Note that Ulicevic is especially well-qualified to comment on lessons from 5G, given that Telefónica Germany was among the first in Europe to deploy 5G Standalone and is the first established (as opposed to green field) operator in the world to host a network on the public cloud – it serves 1 million 5G customers in partnership with AWS.
The panellists discussed the importance of learning from the experience with 5G and the general failure to monetise it, although 5G Standalone’s roll out was delayed by multiple factors, including the pandemic.

- Why European operators have been slow to engage regarding 6G while South Korea and China are racing ahead
- Examining the data that the increasing deployment of all kinds of AI will generate, and what it means for networks, particularly core networks
- The importance of global standards, including risks of fragmentation in part due to the uncertainties of geopolitics
- Adoption of Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF), including how Telefónica Germany is using this technology now, and whether or not it is useful depends on the maturity of an operator’s data ecosystem
- Resilience of 6G in a world where telecoms infrastructure is under threat like never before, both in terms of the size and scope of cyberattacks, with criminals weaponising AI against them, and physical sabotage, for example of multiple subsea cables
