Modern OSS/BSS are the key to monetising 5G

-

Partner video: Ranjani Balakrishnan, OSS/BSS Portfolio Operations at Ericsson, shares insights – and real-life case studies – on how to unlock business growth and the full potential of 5G.

In this interview, the discussion focuses on OSS and BSS modernisation as critical enablers of business growth for communication service providers (CSPs) seeking to monetise 5G Standalone (SA). Ranjani Balakrishnan from Ericsson’s OSS/BSS portfolio explains how Ericsson supports CSPs in modernising their systems to unlock the full value of 5G through AI-driven automation, unified data strategies and autonomous network capabilities.

The telecom industry faces continuous and accelerating change, so CSPs must embrace innovation by modernising legacy infrastructures and adopting cloud-native, scalable and flexible architectures, according to Balakrishnan. Technologies such as AI, automation and cloud are transforming networks while modern OSS and BSS ensure that CSPs can sell, deliver and get paid as efficiently as possible.

Ericsson identifies two main paradigms with 5G SA. The first concerns new business, based on differentiated connectivity, which defines what CSPs can sell. The second is operations centred on autonomous networks, which determines how services are delivered. Both are driven by ‘intent’ she says, encompassing customers’ needs, enterprises’ requirements and CSPs’ business objectives. Aligning these intents across business, service and resource layers simplifies operations and enables CSPs to sell, deliver and monetise services efficiently.

Balakrishnan outlines five interconnected areas of transformation. First is making data AI-ready through advanced data ingestion, correlation, and processing, supported by the Ericsson Telco DataOps Platform. Second is applying AI to real business problems using both ready-made and bespoke agentic AI solutions to improve efficiency and decision-making.

Third is enabling rapid service delivery through intent-based orchestration, assurance and unified real-time inventory. Fourth is simplifying purchases and monetisation by supporting partner ecosystems, creating flexible offers and real-time, resilient charging and billing. The fifth area is adopting a holistic, end-to-end approach to lifecycle management to stay ahead of business needs.

Balakrishnan provides a real-world exemplar of a concert venue where different cohorts require different service parameters, from backstage staff, to broadcasters and concert-goers seeking immersive experiences. She goes on to discuss case studies with CSP customers including AT&T, T-Mobile US and Telstra.
