Femtocells, WiFi, and other tales

0

Mobile Europe spent a day or so at Femtocells World Summit last week, talking to attendees and exhibitors. There were some pretty interesting products and demos to be seen. Here’s a few of them. More to follow…

Coffee time, dicussing the news

Booth tour:

Interdigital and Picochip showing combined WiFi and cellular bandwidth management

Picochip again, this time a demo of femto-to-core LTE interoperability with Cisco and Cavium

Continuous Computing, briefly explaining its femto software “Femtotality” launch

Ubiquisys and Broadcom’s integrated Wifi-Femto

(With thanks to Alcatel-Lucent, whose sponsorship enabled us to film at the event)

LTE, enterprise and applications – where femtocells go from here

At Femtocells World Summit Mobile Europe held a round table debate, sponsored by Alcatel-Lucent, to discuss the current and future state of the femtocell market.

Topics up for discussion – where does the greatest opportunity lie for femtocells, what are the rural and metro opportunities, how will LTE impact upon femtocells and vice versa, will there be femtocell applications and what will they be, and where will the industry head over the next year.

Participants:
Keith Dyer, Editor, Mobile Europe (host); Jorge Alvarez, Network Strategy Manager, Telefónica UK;  Bill Chang, Chief Planning & Strategy Officer, U Mobile; Aditya Kaul, Practice Director, Mobile Networks, ABI Research; George Noon, Leader Innovation & Strategy, Small Cells, Alcatel-Lucent.

Femtocell applications: why, what and how

0

Something that might enhance the femtocell business case for mobile operators is to develop femto-specific applications and services, using femtocells’ unique capabilities and features.

Malek Shahid, Senior Manager, Alcatel-Lucent, tells Keith Dyer how his company is enabling the development of femtocell apps, and outlines a couple of examples of applications now in development.

“Do you know of any operator that is planning LTE that isn’t also thinking about small cells?”

Alcatel-Lucent’s Steve Kemp tells Keith Dyer about the capacity benefits small cell technology can bring to mobile broadband networks. He also outlines the challenges inherent in deploying metro femtocells within shared spectrum and the differences between cloud RAN architectures, such as Alcatel-Lucent’s lightRadio, and femtocells.

Vendor addresses enterprise and residential markets

At Femtocells World Summit, held in London last week, ip.access announced a new class of enterprise femtocell designed to support greater numbers of users and provide coverage over a large area. Andy Tiller, SVP Product Strategy & Marketing, announces the new product and also tells Keith Dyer about software that will enable the efficient management of large numbers of residential femtocells.

Find out what is driving the adoption of femtocells in the enterprise market and what additional capabilities enterprise femtos can provide. Where does public access femto stop, and Cloud Ran begin? Tiller also explains why operators need a dedicated femtocell management solution to support their residential rollouts.
