Telefónica Tech offloads assets to hiberus as exit from LatAm continues

-

This continues the strategy laid out in 2019 but accelerated by Marc Murtra who replaced long-serving Group CEO Alvarez-Pallete in a boardroom coup almost a year ago

Technology company hiberus is to Telefónica Tech’s businesses in Colombia, Mexico and Chile. The companies will maintain a strategic alliance to allow Telefónica Tech to continue serving multinational customers in the region.

According to the press statement, the operation will guarantee the continuity of labour and contractual relations, in accordance with regulations, and without impacting services provided by Telefónica Tech to multinational customers. So, for example, the Digital Operations Center (DOC) in Colombia will continue to be part of Telefónica Tech.

Telefónica Tech says the agreement advances the group strategy for growth and organizational simplification, while concentrating its main efforts on Telefónica Group’s four key markets: Spain, the UK, Germany and Brazil. Former CEO and Chair, Jose Maria Alvarez-Pallete, laid out a similar strategy to extricate the group from Latin America in November 2019 and focus on the Big Four, but clearly wasn’t progressing fast enough for some.

He was unceremoniously replaced in a state-backed boardroom coup last January and his replacement, Marc Murtra, lost no time making the exit from LatAm happen, regardless of some upset on the way out.

Natural evolution

For its part, hiberus will consolidate its presence in Latin America, continue to expand into key markets, boost its capabilities in strategic areas and consolidates its position for providing services to North America.

“This agreement is a natural step in our evolution as a digital services company [in] the Telefónica Group [and] within the framework of the new Transform & Grow Strategic Plan. It will allow us to maintain closeness with customers and continue to offer Telefónica Tech’s services with the same standards of quality and commitment,” according to María Jesús Almazor, COO of Telefónica Tech for Spain and America.

Sergio López, CEO of hiberus, added, “With this operation, we strengthen our cybersecurity and cloud capabilities, as we incorporate a highly specialized team that will lead our presence in Latin America…we laid the foundations for a strategic alliance with Telefónica with a long-term vision.”

The deal is subject to the usual authorisations and procedures.
