Zayo Europe claims ‘landmark’ Iberian deal with Spain’s Reintel

Reintel is Spain’s largest dark fibre operator and the partnership enables Zayo to deploy its 400GE wavelength-based services and extend its reach as a Tier 1 ISP

Zayo Europe announced it has partnered Reintel, Spain’s biggest dark fibre operator, to expand its services and reach across the Iberian peninsula. Reintel has more than 54,000km of neutral fibre infrastructure across Spain.

Reintel’s partnership will allow Zayo Europe to deploy its 400 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) wavelength network to the Iberian Peninsula and expand its Tier-1 IP offering to Portugal and more Spanish cities. As a Tier-1 ISP, Zayo Europe has access to the entire Internet without having paying for IP Transit. It carries “substantial portions” of Internet traffic, leveraging its settlement-free peering agreements with similar sized networks to provide Internet connectivity.

Expanding Zayo’s reach

Zayo Europe connects more than 600 data centres and has more than 2.7 million fibre kilometres and eight subsea systems. It operates across 11 countries in Europe with operations in 400 markets globally, according to its website. The company says its tailored connectivity solutions “enable telecom service providers, cloud platforms, data centres, system integrators, and enterprises to deliver exceptional performance from core to cloud to edge.”

Through partnership with Reintel, Zoya Europe connects together business hubs such as Madrid, Lisbon, Barcelona, Bilbao and Sines. It also now provides more network diversity to improve resilience, reduce deployment times and more connectivity options for businesses and operator.

The partnership also strengthens Zayo Europe’s global reach, linking Iberia to international networks across the Mediterranean and Atlantic.

Interconnecting Europe

Colman Deegan, CEO at Zayo Europe, said, “This partnership marks another important step in Zayo Europe’s journey to connect the continent’s most dynamic markets. Spain and Portugal are quickly emerging as major data centre hubs, with a strong supply of renewable energy driving new investments to power AI and other cutting-edge technologies.”

He added, after “our recent expansion in the German Market, Iberia becomes the next strategic link in furthering the reach of our pan-European network. With the significant DC rollout planned in 2026, Zayo Europe is poised to set connectivity trends for the decade ahead.”

Francisco J. Blanca Patón, CEO at Reintel, noted, “Zayo Europe’s expansion into Iberia aligns perfectly with our mission to accelerate Spain’s digital transformation. Combining our extensive dark fibre footprint with Zayo Europe’s international network and unparalleled service excellence creates powerful opportunities for customers across the region.”

Reintel’s network links the energy and railway sectors, and is 51% owned by Red Eléctrica Group de España (REE). The rest has been held by KKR since 2021.
