Nokia gives life to LTE network for emergency services

    -

Nokia Networks has unveiled an LTE network that can be set up in less than an hour, which is being targeted at the emergency services and public event organisers.

The solution has been built with public safety company Harris Corporation and comprises a transportable eNodeB system. The system features an independent power source, erectable antennas and Wi-Fi, microwave and/or satellite backhaul. Users can also set up an optional core network and application server in case the backhaul connection fails.

The solution uses Nokia’s Flexi Multiradio Base Station 10 product and also includes Harris’s BeOn product, which provides a push to talk service on broadband connected devices.

Nokia said the product can also use its Radio Applications Cloud Server, which allows essential information to be delivered to nearby users locally, rather than through a centralised core.

Bob Fennelly, Head of Government and Public Safety for Nokia Networks, commented: “The collaboration on the new LTE deployable solution builds upon Nokia Networks’ market leading LTE technology and Harris’ proven leadership in integrating LTE and land mobile radio systems.

“By leveraging our Flexi Multiradio Base Station family and Harris’ BeOn group communications suite, we are providing first responders a best-in-class commercial solution that ensures delivery of real-time data and video when most needed.”

Dennis Martinez, Chief Technology Officer for Harris RF Communications, added: “Broadband service is increasingly important for public safety, and the Nokia Networks/Harris LTE deployable solution extends land mobile radio public safety network services to anywhere broadband connectivity exists.

“Together with our powerful BeOn application, we are realising LMR and LTE convergence, providing first responder critical services as push-to-talk voice, situational awareness and streaming video over LTE anytime and anywhere.”

Meanwhile, Nokia Networks said it has been lauded by China Mobile for the swift rollout of a TD-LTE network in Fuzhou. It said it received the best metrics in the country for network coverage, interference level, voice and data quality.
