Ericsson, Erillisverkot test 5G drone detection

-

Ericsson has partnered with Erillisverkot to test how 5G networks could help authorities detect, locate and track unauthorised drones in real time.

The Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology was tested in Helsinki, and uses existing mobile-network sites to detect activity in the air, offering authorities a wider view of what is happening around ports, borders and other sensitive areas.

The test comes as small, low-flying drones become a growing concern for national security, public safety and critical infrastructure.

Traditionally, these drones can be difficult to detect across large areas, especially when they are not connected to a network or sending wireless signals, the telecoms giant revealed.

As a result, ISAC collects information from several mobile-network sites at the same time and can provide a broader picture of activity in an area.

During the demonstration, multiple network sites collected sensing data simultaneously.

Ericsson Head of Solution Area Public Safety, Patrik Wikberg, said: “Reliable situational awareness is essential to protect critical infrastructure and support public safety operations.

“This ISAC drone demonstration with Erillisverkot gives Finnish authorities an opportunity to explore how mobile-network-based sensing could complement existing capabilities and contribute to more scalable awareness in complex environments.”

Erillisverkot, CEO, Timo Lehtimäki, added: “Mission-critical networks must perform when they are needed most.

“This demonstration shows how connectivity can extend into sensing, helping authorities keep people and critical infrastructure safe. Together with Ericsson, we are exploring how this capability can be developed responsibly to meet Finland’s security and preparedness needs.”
