European telecom giants plan joint bid for satellite spectrum

-

Four of Europe’s biggest telecom operators have signed a Letter of Intent to explore a joint bid for Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) spectrum.

In a move aimed at expanding satellite connectivity across the region, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica and Vodafone have partnered to make it easier for mobile users to connect directly to satellites.

This partnership could particularly benefit users in areas where traditional mobile networks have limited or no coverage. The proposed partnership would support the European Commission’s efforts to strengthen Europe’s control over critical communications infrastructure while improving network security and reliability.

A key focus is Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology, which allows ordinary mobile phones to connect to satellites without relying entirely on ground-based mobile towers.

Under the plan, mobile network operators across Europe would have open and non-discriminatory access to the services.

The collaboration also seeks to improve connectivity in underserved areas, strengthen emergency communications and support the development of a European satellite constellation.

However, the agreement remains exploratory, with no final decision on the joint bid or satellite partner. The operators have also confirmed that the initiative will not replace their existing satellite partnerships.
