Fibrus has completed its first phase of its government-funded Project Gigabit rollout in Cumbria.
As a result, over 37,700 homes and businesses in some of the county’s most remote communities will have access to Full Fibre broadband.
The rollout is part of a £150 million UK government investment aimed at improving internet access in rural areas where reliable broadband has been difficult to access.
The wider project is expected to reach more than 53,500 properties. Together with Fibrus’ commercial expansion, it is expected to help bring next-generation broadband to 99% of homes and businesses across Cumbria by the end of 2027.
UK Telecoms Minister, Ian Murray, said: “Fibrus’ milestone is real progress in bringing faster broadband to Cumbria’s rural and remote communities that would otherwise miss out without government investment.”
“For local businesses and community organisations, our gigabit boost means reaching more customers, supporting volunteers and helping people stay connected to each other. This is just one way we are spreading opportunity to every part of the country.”
