The operator plans to connect 85% of all Dutch households to fibre by 2030 but in the meantime, the focus is on connecting and activating households to meet demand
KPN announced plans to invest more than €5 billion in fibre, 5G, cybersecurity, AI. and the digitalization of the Netherlands during its strategy update. KPN launched its Connect, Activate & Grow strategy two years ago and is now at its halfway point.
The operator is also now planning to connect 85% of all Dutch households to fibre by 20230: the previous target was 80% by the end of 2026. In the meantime, KPNs focus is on connecting and activating households to meet demand.
KPN currently provides nearly 70% of Dutch households with a connection; in total more than 90% of Netherlands’ premises have fibre access. For remaining areas, KPN offers 5G alternatives.
Sovereign cloud
Cybersecurity remains a top priority for KPN according to its CEO Joost Farwerck who is also a member of the Cyber Security Council. The operator is also investing hundreds of millions in network resilience and service reliability, from infrastructure redundancy, ethical hacking, training and regular updates to security policies.
Farwerck emphasised the importance of collaboration between government, industry and knowledge institutions: the operator is working with partners and the government to build a sovereign cloud. In cooperation with its high-tech subsidiary NL-ix, KPN is launching services for large companies and other organisations
These services enable full control of data, infrastructure and digital processes, including cloud solutions and applications. DDoS Protection aims to detect and stop attacks in real time.
Protection for all customers
These joint efforts align with KPN’s broader strategy to make cybersecurity more accessible for everyone. Consumer customers will receive KPN SuperVeilig by default – a combination of a malware filter and antivirus software that enhances online security. Early next year, customers will be able to view their personal security status in a dedicated security centre within the MijnKPN app.
Organisations that are customers can activate an additional security layer free of charge with their fixed services via the KPN network to better protect their business. KPN Extra Veilig Internet is a security service that protects all devices on the KPN network against cyberattacks such as viruses, ransomware, and malware. The service operates through a DNS and web filter that automatically blocks unsafe websites.
