The most eye-catching managerial shake-up as the New Year loomed was at Nokia, where Dr JT Bergqvist, who has been in charge of the company’s global networks business, and a member of the executive board since 2002 walked out for “personal reasons”, a terse company statement confirmed.

Bergqvist had only recently extolled the virtues Nokia’s networks business at the annual Nokia Conference in Monaco, but commentators have suggested that he was piqued by missing out on the top job following the departure of executive vp Sari Baldauf.
Baldauf is a Nokia stalwart who has been with the networks division since the early days of GSM and had “long planned” to retire around this time, a statement said.
Baldauf’s replacement will be the Australian Simon Beresford-Wylie.  Beresford-Wylie, who has worked for Nokia since 1998 will start in the role in February 2005. He is currently in charge of Nokia’s infrastructure business in Asia and is a member of Networks’ management team. In his new position, he will be based in Finland.Â
“I have been aware of Sari Baldauf’s plans for quite a long time, and the changes in Networks’ management are a well-planned part of Nokia’s transformation process,” said Jorma Ollila, Chairman and CEO of Nokia.

mobilkom austria, Austria´s leading mobile operator, has launched Tecnomen´s Missed Call Notice to more than 3 million subscribers. With Missed Call Notice, mobilkom austria can provide customers with an easy-to-use, innovative service, which helps manage their personal communication.

Tecnomen has developed a wide range of voice mail services in response to operators´ needs to increase voice mail and other voice services usage and revenues. MMS hub for mobile operators

Comverse pitches exchange model at MMS

Comverse, a unit of Comverse Technology has launched its Comverse MMS Exchange, a central hub enabling multiple network operators to interconnect their MMS multimedia messaging services.

Interoperability of MMS between networks has been an area of some contention for operators, who have been forced to implement separate routing connections and interconnectivity agreements with each and every other operator. Protocol interoperability, message size limitations, network topology and routing, security, content adaptation, and billing and financial settlements are all subject to change, and need to be updated under each agreement.

With the MMS Exchange approach Comverse is hopeful a central exchange will provide a central clearing point for mobile operators’ MMS traffic. The concept is similar to the GRX (GPRS Exchange) businesses set up to target operators’ inter-network GPRS traffic needs.

Comverse’s AMit Mattatia, general manager of the MMS division, said the Exchange can support interoperability between different modes.

“It supports standard and non-standard MMS implementations, GSM to CDMA interconnection, MMS to i-mode interoperability, and can be easily customized to the specific requirements of the service provider and participating operators’ billing, monitoring and reporting.”

Introduces BlackBerry Connect and BlackBerry Built-In

T-Mobile International and Research In Motion today announced plans to support a wider choice of devices with push-based BlackBerry email services. Through the introduction of BlackBerry Connect and BlackBerry Built-In, T-Mobile is extending the range of devices on which BlackBerry services are supported and available to business professionals in Europe.

Support for BlackBerry services will be initially introduced with T-Mobile’s popular organizer, the MDA II; and the rollout with other devices is expected to continue in early 2005 with T-Mobile’s MDA III, Sony Ericsson P910i, Siemens SK65 and Nokia 6820.

RIM’s BlackBerry Connect licensing programme enables mobile device manufacturers to equip their handsets with the integrated ability to connect to BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service.

With the BlackBerry Built-In licensing programme, mobile device manufacturers can incorporate various BlackBerry applications into their own devices including BlackBerry Email, BlackBerry Calendar and BlackBerry Browser applications.  The first device to support BlackBerry Built-In is the Siemens SK65.

T-Mobile International will now be able to offer a much wider choice of devices to suit the preferences and user needs of different staff within the enterprise, all managed on the same robust BlackBerry mobile data infrastructure.

“A widening range of mobile professionals are recognising the productivity benefits of BlackBerry,” said Mark Guibert, Vice President, Corporate Marketing at RIM. “We are very pleased that T-Mobile International is broadening its BlackBerry offering with the introduction of BlackBerry Connect and BlackBerry Built In.”

André Stark, Head of Business Marketing, T-Mobile International comments: “The extension of the BlackBerry service to a much wider range of new and stylish mobile phone handsets allows T-Mobile to address the needs of a broader target group of mobile workers which can now have a much larger variety of handsets to choose from.”

Stark continued: “Both user groups, those with preference for a small and handy voice phone as well as mobile workers with need for a feature rich wireless device will have the freedom to choose the device of their preference from a larger choice of BlackBerry enabled handsets from T-Mobile.”

BlackBerry platforms for both corporate and personal email use are supported. For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server software tightly integrates with Microsoft Exchange or IBM Lotus Domino to enable secure, push-based, wireless access to email and calendar. For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet Service allows users to access multiple personal and/or corporate email accounts (including many popular ISP email accounts as well as Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Domino accounts) from a single device.

O2 confirms it will launch i-mode services

0

After much will-they won’t-they the operator has announced it will launch i-mode services in its UK, German and Irish territories.

There have long been rumours, but today mmo2 confirmed what many have been saying, that it is to become the latest European operator to launch data services based on NTT DoCoMo’s i-mode technology.

Under the terms of the agreement, O2 is licensed by DoCoMo to offer the i-mode capability to the 22 million customers of its 2/2.5G and 3G mobile communications networks. i-mode currently has 45 million subscribers using over 6,100 official content sites in 10 countries and regions, and will be available on an extensive selection of handsets and devices from NEC, Panasonic, Siemens, Motorola and Samsung, amongst others.

O2 UK and O2 Ireland will have exclusive use of i-mode branding and technology in their respective markets.  In Germany, the company will launch the service based on i-mode technology under its own brand.

O2 plans to introduce i-mode in the UK and Ireland during the second half of 2005.  In Germany, the service will be offered from Spring 2006, allowing sufficient time to develop handsets based on i-mode technology that will incorporate O2 Germany’s Genion HomeZone product.

Peter Erskine, chief executive officer of mmO2 plc, said: “Following the recent success of i-mode elsewhere in Europe and its growing subscriber base, we have conducted a thorough evaluation of the opportunities offered by licensing this technology.  Of particular significance is the ARPU increase experienced by other i-mode licencees – largely driven by the combination of an intuitive, easy to use interface with an impressive selection of handsets and a wide-ranging content library.

“O2 remains focused on delivering the best possible service to our customers.  I look forward to a highly productive partnership with DoCoMo – marrying O2’s skills in brand, customer insight and data services with DoCoMo’s considerable research and development capabilities and strong relationships with both device and application/content providers.”

NTT DoCoMo president and chief executive officer, Masao Nakamura, commented: “I am very pleased to initiate a partnership with mmO2, a leading provider of mobile services.  This new collaboration will certainly drive further expansion of i-mode in the global arena.”

BT To Offer BlackBerry In Europe

First MVNO to pick Blackberry

BT today reinforced its presence in the mobile market by signing an agreement with Research In Motion (RIM) to become Europe’s first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) to sell the  BlackBerry(R) wireless solution.

The deal will enable BT to offer BlackBerry to its corporate customer base, building on BT’s success in the business mobile market and extending the benefits currently available to BT’s mobile customers. The BlackBerry Wireless Handhelds(TM) will be co-branded by both BlackBerry and BT.

Developed and manufactured by RIM, BlackBerry offers BT’s customers secure, always-on, wireless access to their corporate email and data, via an advanced BlackBerry handheld with integrated phone, text messaging, browser, calendar and organizer capability. The BlackBerry always-on ‘push’ technology also means customers don’t have to periodically connect to their email to check for new messages; messages are automatically routed to the handheld. BT is initially offering the BlackBerry 7230(TM) and BlackBerry 7730(TM) handhelds.

For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server(TM) software tightly integrates with Microsoft(R) Exchange or IBM Lotus(R) Domino(TM) (Novell GroupWise expected to be available later this year) and works with existing enterprise systems to enable secure, push-based, wireless access to email and other corporate data.

Steven Evans, CEO of BT Mobile, said: “This partnership with RIM is another strong example of BT’s commitment to offer leading edge mobile solutions to corporate customers. The fact that this is the first European deal that RIM has done with a mobile virtual network operator is a strong reflection of BT’s strength in the corporate mobile market. The flexibility that wireless solutions and services can give companies is particularly appealing and BlackBerry has already become indispensable to thousands of organizations across the world.”

Larry Conlee, Chief Operating Officer, Research In Motion, said: “BT has a large corporate customer base with a strong support infrastructure and we are very pleased it has chosen to offer BlackBerry to its customers. Together, we can help mobile professionals achieve significant business and personal benefits through advanced connectivity solutions.”
