Proximus Global launches Konera API platform

-

The launch comes as the Linux Foundation’s CAMARA project issues its third meta release, signalling growing industry coordination

Proximus Global has dropped its new network API aggregation platform, Konera, at the Global Fintech Fest 2025, marking what it frames as a major step in its ambitions to commercialise network APIs and align with the GSMA’s CAMARA open API framework. The launch coincides with the Linux Foundation’s CAMARA project announcing its third “meta release” of stable, production-ready network APIs, a development that optimists would argue underscores the accelerating maturity of telco-led API ecosystems.

Konera is designed to simplify how enterprises and developers access network capabilities by aggregating APIs from multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) into a single, standardised platform. The platform draws on Proximus Global’s subsidiaries, combining BICS’s 300-plus operator relationships with Telesign’s expertise in identity verification and fraud prevention. By offering fintechs and enterprises access to these capabilities through one interface, Proximus aims to remove the complexity of integrating with hundreds of individual APIs.

“Network APIs have long been seen as the telecoms industry’s next big opportunity,” said Jorn Vercamert (above), chief product officer at Proximus Global. “But for APIs to succeed on a global scale, they must be standardised and easy to access. The GSMA’s CAMARA initiative addresses standardisation, but operators still need support to make their networks API-ready, while enterprises need a single platform rather than dealing with hundreds of providers. Proximus Global’s Konera delivers on both fronts.”

The company is targeting India as an initial growth market, with plans to make API-based services available to 92% of the country by the end of 2025 through partnerships with major telecoms operators. Rajdip Gupta, managing director and CEO of Route Mobile, a Proximus Global company, said: “Through Konera, we’re building on Proximus Global’s foundation to unlock new monetisation opportunities for operators and seamless integration for enterprises.”

Citing Analysys Mason figures, Gupta noted that global spending on CAMARA-based network APIs is forecast to grow by a whopping 1,282% – albeit from a small base – between 2024 and 2030, from $550 million to $7.6 billion.

CAMARA’s third release

The timing of the launch aligns with a broader industry shift towards open and standardised APIs, reflected in the CAMARA project’s latest meta release. Announced on 7 October, CAMARA’s third meta release delivers expanded API coverage and a conformance programme intended to accelerate deployment across operators and partners. It now includes 60 APIs – ten stable, 27 updated, and 23 new – offering developers a consistent framework to integrate capabilities such as number verification, SIM swap detection, quality-on-demand and edge discovery.

Among the stable APIs now available are Device Reachability Status and Device Roaming Status, which enable telecoms and IoT providers to ensure reliable service delivery, and Number Verification and Location Verification, which help enterprises confirm user identities and prevent fraud.

The inclusion of One-Time Password (OTP) APIs allows for network-based authentication, reducing reliance on third-party SMS aggregators. New additions such as Verified Caller and SIM Swap APIs are particularly relevant to banks and fintech firms seeking to combat fraud and increase consumer trust by detecting account takeover risks in real time.

The latest release also brings new capabilities supporting performance and operational optimisation. Quality-on-Demand APIs allow gaming and streaming providers to guarantee network performance, while Simple Edge Discovery helps applications identify the closest edge node for lower latency. Meanwhile, APIs such as Population Density Data and Connectivity Insights support smart city and enterprise use cases, enabling real-time decision-making and network analysis.

“The newest CAMARA release is a key step toward a global, open API ecosystem,” said Arpit Joshipura, general manager of networking, edge and IoT at the Linux Foundation. “By delivering stable, production-ready APIs alongside new innovations, CAMARA empowers partners to collaborate at scale.”

Nathan Rader, governing board chair of CAMARA and vice-president of capability and exposure at Deutsche Telekom, added that the project’s progress was strengthening alignment with global initiatives like GSMA Open Gateway and TM Forum.

Since its official launch in 2022, CAMARA has grown rapidly – from its original 22 partners to more than 1,300 contributors across 476 organisations. The project now manages 45 sandbox repositories, 15 incubating APIs and 60 released APIs. This scale of participation reflects strong ecosystem support for open, standardised APIs. CAMARA’s twice-yearly meta releases are now establishing a predictable cadence for operators and developers to plan network integrations with confidence.
