Finland’s Sonera launches LTE-A network with carrier aggregation

    -

Sonera has launched an LTE-A network in Helsinki thanks to carrier aggregation.

The Finland-based operator saw data rates of up to 300Mbps on parts of its network by aggregating frequency on the 1800Mz and 2600Mz bands in parts of the capital city.

The LTE-A network is based on Nokia Network’s Flexi Multiradio 10 base station, and is available to business customers on Sonera’s Sopiva Pro and Real 4G Max plans.

Kalev Reiljan, CTO of TeliaSonera Finland, said: “We want to offer the fastest possible data speeds to our customers. Over 60 percent of Finns use smartphones and generate more data traffic than customers using older devices. With LTE-Advanced we make sure our network can address these capacity changes now and in the future.”

Last week, Nokia Networks announced it had more than doubled data upload speeds for Ooredoo Qatar and Finnish incumbent Elisa in two separate trials of its C-RAN technology.

In October, the vendor held tests of three-band carrier aggregation using 40MHz spectrum across 3GPP bands 1, 3 and 5.

The Finland-based company said the trial showed how carrier aggregation could help operators with fragmented spectrum holdings bring higher speeds to its customers.

It has also delivered peak data rates of more than 200Mbps, in the vendor’s first example of carrier aggregation through small cells.

Nokia and Ericsson recently came to blows on Twitter in a debate dubbed #worldfirstgate over innovations in carrier aggregation, after Ericsson claimed it had hit a “world first” in FDD/TDD CA.
