3GSM NEWS: Orange, Texas Instruments and Viaccess Collaborate to protect mobile TV content

    -

Supporting the continued convergence of media to the mobile, Texas Instruments announced today that it is working with mobile operator Orange and Viaccess, a leading solution provider for the secure distribution of digital media content, to provide content and access protection for broadcast TV on a mobile device. Powered by TI’s OMAP processor with its integrated M-Shield system-level security technology, Viaccess’
Conditional Access provides the secure environment for Orange to easily deploy protected mobile TV content over the wireless network.

TI’s OMAP processor offers both the multimedia and security acceleration and framework to unleash the potential of Viaccess’ Conditional Access solution. TI’s standards-compliant M-Shield security technology, integrated on the OMAP processor, will provide the high security levels needed to protect both the execution of the conditional access
application and the system-level handset security, whilst the OMAP processor itself meets the performance and power requirements of the decrypted mobile TV content.

Viaccess’ Conditional Access gives mobile handsets the capability to support multiple distribution models for mobile television, including TV channel bouquet subscription, ‘à la carte’ subscription, pay-per-minute and pay-per-view. The Viaccess solution brings both versatility and support for a broad variety of cases to both service operators and end users, providing essential flexibility in the launch phase of mobile TV services.

TI’s M-Shield mobile security technology solution provides the highest level of terminal and content security in the industry today, andaddresses the standards requirements for content protection. M-Shieldtechnology intimately interleaves hardware and software technologies at the system level to provide the highest level of security and is the keysecurity element of TI’s OMAP platform and OMAP-Vox™ processors.

“Effective, flexible security is essential to the successful deployment of Mobile TV,” said Loic Hamon, Strategic Marketing Director of TI’s Wireless Terminals Business Unit. “TI’s M-Shield security framework, integrated into our OMAP application processor platform, provides the robust, flexible, system-level security solution required to safely ensure the content protection necessary to enable mass deployment of mobile TV.”

“Mobile TV is a core element in the convergence of media over IP, DSL and phone networks,” said Yves Cristol, Director Device Development, Orange Devices. “The performance and flexibility of TI’s OMAP processors and M-Shield security framework will allow Orange to expand the flexible usage of its services, achieving its objective of total media convergence anywhere, anytime.”

Mobile TV Conditional Access will be demonstrated by TI on their booth at 3GSM World Congress.
