Swiss telecom operators Sunrise and Salt have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore expanding their existing network infrastructure partnership in rural and less populated parts of Switzerland.
Under the agreement, the two operators will explore will find more ways to share mobile sites more efficiently and coordinate parts of their radio access networks, with the aim of improving coverage and network quality outside the country’s main urban centres.
Both companies will remain fully independent competitors, the company’s revealed.
By sharing resources, Sunrise and Salt hope to make investment more efficient and improve connectivity for people living beyond Switzerland’s major cities.
The companies are also considering models such as Multi-Operator Core Network, which could help reduce costs and allow investment to be focused where it is needed most, they revealed.
The proposed expansion is still subject to detailed technical assessments and the necessary regulatory approvals.
The news comes as the news comes six years after Sunrise and Salt entered a strategic fibre partnership in 2020, when the operators announced plans to jointly develop an FTTH platform designed to extend ultrafast broadband connectivity across Switzerland.
