Ciena secures Space Norway Arctic cable deal

-

Ciena has secured a contract with Space Norway to upgrade its existing Svalbard subsea cable systems and provide networking technology for the new Arctic Way cable system.

As a result, the project will extend the lifespan of Space Norway’s existing subsea infrastructure while improving connectivity across the Arctic.

Arctic Way is expected to enter service in 2028 and will carry data traffic between mainland Norway, Jan Mayen and Svalbard.

Under the turnkey agreement, Ciena will handle the design and deployment of the network, using its 6500 Optical Platform with WaveLogic 6 Extreme transponders and Spectrum Sharing technology.

Meanwhile, Ciena will also deploy its Navigator Network Control Suite to give Space Norway greater visibility and control over its network, the company revealed.

Space Norway, Acting Vice President of Cable Systems, Pia Birgitte Bruhn said: “Reliable connectivity is essential in the Arctic, where our infrastructure supports critical activities and demanding operational requirements.

“By working with Ciena, we are extending the operational life of our existing Svalbard cable systems while preparing Arctic Way for service. This investment will strengthen the resilience and capacity of our subsea network and support the region’s long-term connectivity needs.”

Ciena VP of Global Subsea and MOFN, Thomas Soerensen added: “Organisations delivering mission-critical connectivity in remote and harsh environments need infrastructure built for resilience and long-term durability.

“Ciena is proud to be selected by Space Norway to enable reliable and high-speed connectivity in one of the world’s most strategically important and challenging Arctic environments, safeguarding communications well into the future.”
