Openreach taps Ciena for UK-wide 800G rollout

-

Openreach is rolling out 800G services across the UK for the first time, using Ciena technology to increase capacity across its UK optical network.

As a result, the company is using Ciena’s Waveserver platform and WaveLogic 6 1.6Tb/s technology for the upgrade, which will sit within its Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA) portfolio.

The move is aimed at wholesale customers that need to move large amounts of data between locations such as data centres, cable landing stations and core network sites.

Additionally, Openreach will carry 400G and 800G customer traffic over dedicated 1.6Tb/s wavelengths. Each 2RU chassis can support up to 32 400G services.

The deployment marks the first time Openreach has offered 800G services nationally and also gives it room to offer faster services in future.

Meanwhile, Openreach expects customers to use the network for links between data centres, private cloud networks and connections from international subsea cables landing in the UK.

Openreach Director of Products, Nicolas Lemaitre, said: “Demand for fast, reliable connectivity is growing rapidly. This investment shows how Openreach is strengthening its network to support wholesale customers across the UK.

“By using Ciena’s Waveserver and WL6 technology, we’re preparing our services for the next wave of digital growth, including increasing demand from AI applications and Critical National Infrastructure.”
