Amazon has unveiled plans to invest over €16 billion ($18 billion) in Germany in 2027, focusing on AI, cloud computing, logistics, satellite internet and entertainment.
The investment builds on the more than €100 billion Amazon has spent in Germany since 2010.
Amazon Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, said: “Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe.
“That is why we have invested more than €100 billion here since 2010, and why we plan to invest an additional €16 billion in 2027. We want German businesses, communities, and creators to have the infrastructure and tools they need to compete and grow.”
Of the planned investment, €4.8 billion will go towards expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud and AI infrastructure in Frankfurt, alongside the technology giant opening a second robotics and AI research laboratory in Berlin, creating specialised jobs in engineering and technology.
Meanwhile, the company plans to upgrade a raft of fulfillment centres, including facilities in Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund and Werne. As a result, new logistics projects in Zweibrücken and Könnern are expected to create more than 3,000 jobs.
Amazon Germany, Country Manager, Rocco Bräuniger, said: “We have already created over 40,000 permanent jobs, built more than 100 sites, and invested more than €100 billion in Germany-and we are far from done.
“Customers expect us to keep innovating, and that is exactly what we will do: with faster logistics, cutting-edge AI, high-speed satellite internet, and German stories that captivate Prime Video audiences around the world.”
The investment also includes Amazon Leo, a satellite internet project designed to bring high-speed connectivity to underserved areas.
AWS VP of Global Sales for Germany and Europe Central, Stefan Höchbauer, added: “In a fast-moving world, companies need infrastructure they can rely on- secure, available, and built to help them stay ahead. They need the broadest choice of services to meet their individual needs.
“That is exactly what AWS offers. We will keep investing so that German innovation keeps thriving. As part of the investments, €4.8 billion is planned to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region through 2027.”
The company added it is investing in more efficient cooling systems, renewable energy and AI to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
The initiatives support Amazon’s wider goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 under its Climate Pledge commitment.
