EE’s Karonis to lead new IT and Mobile team within BT

    -

EE Chief Technology Officer Fotis Karonis has been appointed head of a new IT and Mobile business unit within BT’s technology team.

The operator’s top team has been substantially reorganised as it begins life as a wing of BT’s operations. Former Chief Commercial Officer Marc Allera has stepped up to the EE Chief Executive role, replacing Olaf Swantee.

BT’s Technology, Services and Operations team will support six business units, which are split between supporting consumers, businesses and public sector, and wholesale.

It will continue to be responsible for BT’s core networks, its IT platform and its global research and development arm. Within that unit will be a new IT and Mobile division, led by Karonis. He will join the newly appointed TSO head Howard Watson’s leadership team.

Karonis was the 2015 winner of Mobile Europe’s CTO of the Year award.

BT Group Chief Executive Gavin Patterson said: “I’m delighted we have now completed our acquisition of EE. That is great news for our shareholders, our customers and for UK plc given we will continue to invest and innovate. Customers will benefit as we combine the power of fibre broadband with the convenience of mobile.”

Patterson said he had taken the opportunity presented by the takeover to reorganise how it deals with customers.

He added: “The acquisition provides us with a chance to refresh our structure and we have done that by creating a major new division that will focus on businesses and the public sector in the UK and Ireland. We want to support those sectors by offering customers the very best services whether that be dedicated private lines, network products such as fibre broadband, mobile solutions, IT services or cyber expertise to keep them safe.”
