EXA Infrastructure has expanded its long-haul terrestrial network with a new route directly linking Barcelona and Bilbao.
As a result, the move will give traffic from the Mediterranean, Middle East, Africa and Asia a more direct route to transatlantic cable systems and North America.
According to the company, the new route changes that by creating a stronger east-west connection across Spain, allowing the city to act as a gateway between major international networks.
The route also passes through the Zaragoza region, which is becoming a major European hub for hyperscale and AI data centres.
With growing traffic between Lisbon, Madrid and the rest of Europe, as well as increasing demand for connections to Mediterranean markets, the new link adds another important route through the region.
Zaragoza and the wider Aragón region have attracted significant investment from AWS, Microsoft and QTS, as a result, the region is expected to become one of Europe’s largest data centre markets, with more than 1.6GW of projected capacity by 2030
This comes as EXA already connects the eight main data centres across Catalonia.
EXA Infrastructure, SVP, Strategic Investments and Product Management, Steve Roberts, said: “Barcelona has always been a natural meeting point between East and West.
“By extending our terrestrial long-haul footprint directly to the Atlantic corridor, we are giving our customers, and the subsea players that already land there, a genuinely shorter and more resilient path to transatlantic systems.”
