FiberCop has unveiled plans to create a nationwide network of more than 100 edge data centres across Italy.
As a result, the new infrastructure will give telecom operators a distributed platform to support services for businesses, public administrations and local communities, hoping to improve performance and reduce delays.
The first edge data centre is already running at a FiberCop exchange in Rome, with new sites planned soon in Turin, Genoa, Bologna, Naples and Palermo.

FiberCop chairman and CEO, Massimo Sarmi, said: “Our exchanges are moving from network access points to become true innovation hubs, in which connectivity, computing power and storage capacity are integrated to support the country’s digital development.
“With this plan, FiberCop takes a further step forward in transforming its network infrastructure into an enabling technology platform, capable of supporting the growth of the edge cloud, artificial intelligence and new digital services.”
Using its existing national network, FiberCop also aims to imporove its computing resources, which will result in a reduction in latency, support real-time services, stronger data protection and more efficient network management.
According to the company, the platform will also support wider adoption of AI by allowing organisations to process data closer to its source.
Alongside the rollout, FiberCop is investing in research and development through its Innovation Hub and partnerships with universities, research centres and industry organisations.
