G&D SIMs to power Swisscom’s Tapit

    -

Giesecke & Devrient (G&D) is to supply NFC SIMs from its SkySIM CX range to Swisscom for the operator’s Tapit mobile payments scheme.

Tapit launched last month and allows consumers to use their Android handsets to make payments, collect loyalty points and open doors at workplaces. G&D has provided a secure SIM card for the scheme, storing sensitive information like card details or an employee’s ID to allow them to get into a building.

The company’s SIM has been approved by digital and m-payments technical body EMVCo, American Express, Mastercard and Visa. While Tapit currently only supports Visa cards supplied by Cornèrcard, Mastercard provider Aduno Group/Viseca is expected to follow in the coming months.

The SIMs also support the Swiss transit applications MIFARE, CIPURSE and Calypso, allowing consumers to use their smartphones to pay for journeys.

G&D are supplying the SIM cards in 2FF, micro-SIM, nano-SIM and triple-SIM form factors and they can be used on 2G, 3G and 4G LTE networks.

Tapit was developed by Swisscom, with Orange and Sunrise customers expected to be able to use the service later this year. It can be used to make payments in more than 50,000 shops across Switzerland. Purchases of more than €32 require a password or PIN.

Earlier this year, Deutsche Telekom used G&D’s SkySIM CX card for its own mobile wallet proposition, dubbed MyWallet.
