Germany kicks off EU digital ID, authentication and trust trial

    -

Plus mobile contract and SIM ID pilots to go ahead in Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Greece, the Netherlands and Ukraine

After recently adopting electronic identification, authentication and trust services (eIDAS) regulation Germany’s three main mobile operators are to participate in field trials.

    Standardisation effort

Deutsche Telekom (DT), O2 Telefónica and VodafoneDeutschland will run trials to “further develop digital-ID functions and standardise them across the European Union [EU]…to provide citizens with a secure digital identity,” according to this press release, issued by DT.

The operators are part of a consortium called Potential, which is responsible for testing EU digital identity wallets in 19 countries. “The consortium partners are testing digital identities for opening bank accounts, digital driver’s licences or renting a rental car. Testing for online citizen services and approved electronic signatures are ongoing,” said the operator.

    Mobile contracts and SIMs

Among other things, the parties want to show how mobile contracts and SIM cards can be activated easily and securely across countries with digital identities, and to help curb digital identity fraud.

The new technology complies with GDPR requirements, which keeps the use of customers’ data to a minimum. The tests by operators are taking place in Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Greece and the Netherlands plus Ukraine.
