GSMA gets boost from operators for embedded SIM M2M tech

    -

The GSMA’s embedded SIM specification has been boosted by Telefónica, Tele2 and Indosat adopting the technology for M2M rollouts.

The technology has now been backed by 23 operators and 11 of them have launched services commercially based on the specification. It allows for remote, over-the-air provisioning of M2M devices that can be used in the likes of smart meters or connected cars.

The GSMA said by adopting a common and interoperable standard, operators will be able to gain a foothold into the Internet of Things market, which could be worth $1.1 trillion (€978 billion) by 2020.

According to figures from the trade body, almost 75 percent of M2M connections worldwide are handled by operators using the embedded SIM. It cited figures by Machina Research that said this tech would account for a quarter of the embedded share of gross cellular additions in 2020.

The GSMA has recently added a profile interoperability feature to the technology. It allows operators to create a profile that can then be downloaded onto any compliant eUICC, regardless of who makes it.

The trade body said this feature would allow operators to increase the number of M2M devices it can connect.

It has also issues new test specifications to ensure devices’ security levels are up to scratch.

Alex Sinclair, Acting Director General and Chief Technology Officer, GSMA, said: “It is clear that the industry is united behind this global standard which allows mobile operators to provide scalable, reliable and secure connectivity for a range of diverse services such as smart meters, traffic lights and home security, among many others.

“With commercial solutions already available today, we encourage additional operators and ecosystem players to adopt the specification in order to capitalise on the tremendous market opportunity enabled by the IoT.”
