Huawei, China Mobile demonstrate virtualised VoLTE and next-gen network architecture

Huawei and China Mobile have completed a successful demonstration of a virtual VoLTE solution and shown off a prototype for a new, SDN/NFV-based network architecture.

Huawei said its “cloudified” VoLTE solution uses its own off-the-shelf, commercial hardware and cloud operating system, and has been designed specifically to support China Mobile’s VoLTE roll out.

The solution uses NFV-based core network elements, including virtualised evolved packet core, IP Multimedia Subsystem and subscriber data management. During a demonstration, China Mobile customers were successfully able to use HD voice and video services, the vendor claimed.

Huawei announced in February that it had secured 35 new VoLTE contracts, including one with China Mobile.

The two companies also revealed a prototype for a next-generation mobile network architecture, again with virtualisation at its core.

Huawei said the solution leverages SDN and NFV to highlight how future mobile services – such as those to emerge from 5G and “pre-5G” – will require a network architecture that offers greater flexibility, scalability, and deployment speed.

During a demonstration of the prototype system, Huawei said it showcased a number of features including dynamic scalability of the forwarding entity, switchover of the local gateway forwarding plane and the ability to configure policy control in real-time.

The vendor said: “The acceleration of cloud technology development has resulted in carriers moving away from traditional service architecture unable to provide a satisfactory user experience, to an ICT integrated cloud architecture.

“NFV will change the closed circle of the traditional telecom network, shorten service innovation period, reduce operation and maintenance costs, and establish a more open industrial chain.”
