    Liberty launches 1GBps Wi-Fi gateway

Liberty Global has launched a Wi-Fi and telephony gateway promising download speeds of up to 1GBps.

The product, which is being rolled out for Liberty customers in Europe and Latin America, includes a modem and Wi-Fi router that can greatly improve in-home wireless connectivity for customers, the company said.

According to Liberty, the gateway enables gigabit speeds on the cableco’s existing EuroDOCSIS 3.0 network and can be set up quickly by users.

It also contains software from fabless semiconductor company Celeno that enables Wi-Fi speeds to be optimised for multiple devices simultaneously.

Telenet customers in Belgium and UPC customers in Romania will be the first to receive the product.

Liberty said the gateway will be introduced to the rest of its operating companies in Europe “in the coming months”.

Doron Hacmon, Managing Director of Products and Online Media at Liberty, said: “Our next-generation Wi-Fi and telephony gateway enables us to maximise the impact of our high-speed fibre networks across Europe by giving our customers a better, faster and even more reliable internet experience.

“Our customers rightly demand seamless Wi-Fi connectivity both in and out of the home, and we will continue to focus relentlessly on providing them with a best-in-class experience, wherever they happen to be.”

Liberty also pledged to grow the number of public Wi-Fi hotspots it operates in Europe, from six million currently to 10 million by next year.

A study from ABI this year reported that the number of Wi-Fi access points could hit 400 million by 2019 thanks to the proliferation of hotspot technologies.
